To the applause and cheers of family and friends, the first 75 graduates of the English Access MicroScholarship Program (Access) in Porto Alegre received their certificates of achievement during a joyous graduation ceremony at the Instituto Cultural on January 25.  Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer Katherine Caro represented the Mission to congratulate the students on their dedication and accomplishments as she bestowed the certificates.  In discussing the merits of this special English Language program, Ms. Caro encouraged the students to continue mastering English, which would open new opportunities for them in academe and business.  The Access Program provides a foundation of English language skills to non-elite, 14-18 year old students through afterschool classes and intensive summer learning activities. Since the Department of State launched the program in 2004, over 55,000 students from 70 countries have participated.
