Consul General Thomas Kelly with Piracicaba Mayor, Barjas Negri
On June 29, Consul General Thomas Kelly visited the city of Piracicaba in the interior of Sao Paulo state. In this first trip to Piracicaba, he met with business and political leaders to underscore the growing economic relationship between Brazil and the United States. Meeting with Mayor Barjas Negri, CG Kelly discussed the importance of fostering opportunities for economic partnerships, particularly with Piracicaba's strong agro-industrial sector but also as a welcoming location for U.S. investment in the manufacturing sector. Caterpillar, the U.S. heavy construction equipment manufacturer, is a prime example of successful American investment in Brazil. Caterpillar employs 5,700 people in Brazil. Visiting the company's headquarters, CG Kelly met with President of Caterpillar Brasil Luiz Carlos Calil and the company's directors to learn more about their operations. In remarks to company managers, he praised Caterpillar for the firm's business acumen and community engagement. He also stressed how Caterpillar, one of Brazil's top 15 exporters, reflected U.S. companies' contribution to Brazil's economic boom.
