Winner of Pre-Estreia earns Music Ambassadorship to Juilliard

Sao Paulo

PAO TJ Dowling congratulates José Milton Vieira

Pré-Estreia program finalists

Under the bright lights of the Sala São Paulo stage, José Milton Vieira, a trombonist from Porto Alegre, shown brighter and brightest, winning TV Cultura’s Pre-Estreia national musical competition and a scholarship from the U.S. Consulate in São Paulo to participate in an intensive two-week study program at Juilliard.

Recognizing the power of music to transcend the divisions of language and borders to strike common chords among peoples and societies throughout the world the U.S. Consulate has supported music festivals and workshops throughout the São Paulo consular district. Chief among these is a long-term youth music exchange program between the famed Juilliard School in New York City and Santa Marcelina Guri Project. This program brings Juilliard professors and students to Brazil for several weeks each year to conduct workshops for over 50,000 low-income, public school students in the state of Sao Paulo.

The U.S. Consulate scholarship for Jose Milton is a result of this partnership with Juilliard and with the organizers of the competition, Fundação Padre Anchieta, who share a commitment to support youth music programs and inspire future generations of musicians.  After Jose completes his course in New York, the U.S. Consulate will arrange a series of workshops and performances with our many social and professional partners for this young Music Ambassador to share his talent and experience with other young musicians throughout Brazil.

The U.S. Consulate also invited alumni of our youth programs to the concert and they had the opportunity to meet the winner and share their own experiences of traveling to the United States.  From Youth Ambassadors to Music Ambassadors the network of U.S. Mission alumni continues to grow and the U.S. Consulate General in São Paulo looks forward to many more years of fruitful partnership with the young musicians of Brazil.
